Gemini’s launch made multimodality a platform decision
Google announced Gemini on December 6, 2023. Google introduced Gemini as a family designed across text, code, audio, image, and video rather than as a text model with separate features added later. It also launched the family in Ultra, Pro, and Nano sizes, spanning cloud and on-device use.
The strategic point was bigger than a single benchmark. Multimodality started becoming an architecture choice for products: should an application combine separate specialist models, or use one model that can reason across several input types?
Neither approach wins automatically. Unified models simplify orchestration, but specialist pipelines can remain cheaper, easier to debug, or more accurate for narrow tasks. Gemini made that trade-off harder for product teams to ignore.
